Exploring the Newest Marine GPS Systems

by Richard Gilliland

A GPS is named for a Global Positioning System, a technology originally developed by the U.S. Department of Defense. It is a Global Navigation Satellite System and is currently the only functional system of its kind in the world. This satellite operation uses a constellation of about 24-32 satellites that are in medium earth orbit. These satellites transmit microwave signals which allow users to determine their current location, as well as other data like the time of day and the velocity rate. What's the difference between an ordinary GPS system and marine GPS systems? In terms of technology, not much is different. However, GPS systems are built specifically for sea travel, and with vessels such as tankers, boats, yachts and cruise liners.

Marine GPS systems are not as complex as marine radars or other navigational devices. They merely provide a map location so that the captain knows where he or she is positioned at all times. Since many users are impressed with the reliability and efficiency of their standard systems, they may also be interested in marine Global position systems. The major differences will be in the marine GPS design. The color display that one usually reviews in a car will have to be in plain view of the sun, so a special color display will be required making the images sunlight-readable.

Other features might include a waterproof GPS, which will protect the fragile device from unexpected yet unavoidable splashes of water aboard the ship. Other marine GPS systems might include tide data, so that navigators can decide the best time to travel and the safest way to do so. Still other GPS systems might also list prime fishing times. There are even fish finder GPS systems that can keep track of your location in the water and other data that will help you fish more effectively. Some will actually use sonar technology to locate fish and water depth.

Higher-end marine GPS systems might also include multiple channels for faster satellite communication and databases that allow the display of city locations and nautical landmarks. Some marine GPS systems will be lightweight and ergonomically designed for "hands free" use. Some systems are actually so waterproof that they can actually float in the water and still work! The most important feature may well be a collision avoidance system that tracks multiple targets that are a close distance to your ship.

One feature that's not necessarily high-tech, but may be just as important is that of large buttons. These buttons would be conveniently large and conveniently located so they can be pressed easily while a user wears heavy gloves. If you are boating in cold weather or handling dangerous equipment, gloves are essential-as is your GPS!

Expect to pay anywhere from $100 to $1,000 for marine GPS systems, depending on what features they offer. Your fishing and boating expeditions just got that much easier thanks to GPS technology! For more information contact GPS companies or retail marine stores online.
