Internet Marketing 101 - Online Forums for Profit

As I have said before, a complete and comprehensive Internet marketing portfolio will include a niche product and/or service or two, utilization of Google AdWords and AdSense, and at least one profitable affiliate package. But all too often neglected as a tool for supplementary income generation are the online forums. I have been utilizing the online forums for quite a while now to generate a nice and continuous supplementary income stream, and as a tool to drive targeted traffic to my websites.
It must be stated at the outset that earning money on the forums is often not the primary reason people, namely Internet marketers, participate in the forums to begin with. Nor is it the primary reason for the existence of the forums. Nonetheless, the online forums can be a profitable venue for savvy marketers when they are utilized and leveraged correctly.
All online forums are not created equal and there are several types of online forum. First and foremost there is the standard discussion forum. The discussion forum is just that-a forum for discussion of the primary topic for which the forum was created. For example, I am a member of the Warrior Forum, a forum whose sole purpose is for the discussion of all things Internet marketing.
Another type of forum is the free ad forum. One example of this free ad forum type is The Free Ad Forum. Such free ad forums are set up for both general, topic-specific discussion, as well allowing for free advertisement of products and services under a designated topic area.
One other type of forum, though distinct from the discussion-type forums, is the classified forum. A couple examples of such forums would be Craigslist.com and USFreeAds.com.
All of the above forum types have proved profitable to me personally in two ways. First of all, my posts have drawn in substantial traffic (traffic that I otherwise would have missed out on) to my two business websites. Traffic is money after all. Secondly, I have been able to place my products and services before a highly targeted audience and turn some fairly substantial profits.
How have I managed to do this? First and foremost, I have learned that, by and far, the forums become more profitable to you when you become an active and contributing member of the community-by building relationships (not by bombarding the forums with advertisement after advertisement). In fact, overt and improper advertisement can result in your being banned permanently from certain forums. Always place your ads in the appropriate category and never place them where there are not allowed.
Secondly, there is a certain forum etiquette that must be adhered to. Failure to adhere to a forum's standards (usually posted clearly on the forum) will result in one's being banned as well. Unfortunately, many forum newbies don't pay attention to the rules and regulations of their chosen forums and end up either banned or with such a sullied reputation that no one wants to do business with them. This can be avoided by knowing and abiding by forum etiquette. Of course I see so-called Internet marketing pros making the same mistakes all of the time and abusing the forums. You can bet your bottom dollar that these individuals aren't making any money via forum networking!
Finally, certain products and services do quite well in the forums while others are not necessarily very good forum performers. The key to success here is researching the forums that you have an interest in networking and advertising in, and creatively exploiting any available niche(s) that you can fill with a viable product or service. Types of products that do well in the forums are generally informational in nature or service oriented.
The above is but a brief primer on utilizing the online forums for profit. Internet marketers, stop overlooking the forums as a source of streaming income. They can prove quite profitable. While the learning curve for income generation via the forums is slightly high, it can be lowered. Learn from those who have gone before you. Become part of the forums as sincere individuals seeking to learn from others and to help others. Build real relationships. Learn the ropes for your chosen forum(s). When the time is right, you will know it. Then get ready to make some money.
